The Center for Environment organized the second edition of the Summer School of Urban Mobility in Sarajevo from July 17th to July 21st, 2023. This activity was implemented as part of the ClimaSUM project, in which the Center and CDV – Centrum dopravního výzkumu, v.v.i. (Transport Research Center) are partners with ODRAZ-Održivi razvoj zajednice (Sustainable Community Development).

During the five-day duration of the summer school, students from various faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including transportation faculties, had the opportunity to get a closer look at the topic of urban mobility, exploring different possibilities, practices, and challenges in this field.
The Summer School of Urban Mobility commenced with film screenings, and on the first day of lectures, attendees had the chance to listen to Doc. Dr. Igor Kuvač (AGGF UNIBL) speak about Urbanism and Urban Mobility – from academia to practice. Additionally, the students were given the task of designing movement routes on a topographic map using the example of the Banja Luka – Čelinac area. The lectures continued with Stevan Čukić (DIRG, Bijeljina) presenting the SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan) document for the city of Bijeljina, followed by Prof. Dr. Danislav Drašković (Paneuropean University Apeiron) discussing contemporary models of organizing public urban passenger transport, and Ahmed Ćerimović (NextBike BiH) talking about the significance and functioning of bike-sharing systems. After the penultimate lecture, the students were tasked with devising an expansion plan for the NextBike system in Sarajevo with different budget scenarios.
The following day, a field visit to various points of interest in Sarajevo was conducted, hosted by Damir Margeta from the Giro di Sarajevo association. The day continued with a lecture by Dragana Dardić from the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka, focusing on Gender and Transport. This session was followed by field observations of the gender distribution of passengers in various modes of transportation.
On Thursday, the lectures commenced with Antonije Ćatić discussing the role of geoinformation systems in the field of urban mobility, and the lecture concluded with interactive mapping of the participants using the QGIS tool. Vladimir Borisavljević, representing the design company Urbis Centar, continued with lectures, attempting to familiarize the students with various challenges encountered in the planning process. The students also had the opportunity that day to learn about different examples and initiatives implemented in Zagreb, presented by Zvonimir Lozić from the Bicycle Union of Zagreb. The day ended with a presentation on the importance and examples of participatory decision-making models focused on urban mobility and spatial planning. This session, along with the subsequent field visit to Hastahana Park, was led by Alma Midžić.
The Summer School concluded on Friday with a presentation of the activities of the citizens’ initiative “Banjalučka kritična masa” (Banja Luka Critical Mass), group work on designing solutions and movement models for different forms of transportation, based on one intersection as an example, and the awarding of certificates to participants.
The CLIMASUM project addresses future mobility issues in the context of sustainability, participatory approaches, and priority strategies for the future of Europe, through smart, sustainable, and innovative mobility planning in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI).
