In Sarajevo, on July 12, representatives of the Center for Environment held a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The aim of the meeting was to enhance the existing Traffic Signaling Regulation and its accompanying guidelines to incorporate elements of cycling infrastructure and signaling that are not currently recognized in domestic legislation. “The absence of such elements is the most common obstacle in advocating for the improvement of cycling infrastructure in local government units. This is often cited by representatives of local government units as the main reason for not implementing such projects, even though local government units can formally and legally use examples of best practices from other cities and municipalities outside Bosnia and Herzegovina,” emphasized Dragan Kabić, Program Coordinator for Transportation at the Center for Environment.
In addition to improving the Traffic Signaling Regulation with elements related to urban cycling infrastructure, one of the goals is to introduce a new sign indicating the international EuroVelo cycling routes. This is a fundamental requirement for the development of such routes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this context, the Center for Environment continues to work on the development of the first such route in Bosnia and Herzegovina – the Sava Route.
The meeting was productive, and representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of BiH agreed to provide a letter of support to the Center for Environment for the establishment and management of the National Coordination Body for Cyclotourism.
