On the World Climate Change Day, which is marked on May 15 as a reminder of global climate change caused by man, the Center for Environment warns that urgent action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and thus significantly reduce the consequences of climate change. One of the actions that must begin in BiH as soon as possible is to give up dirty energy produced from coal.

Large pollutants, primarily thermal power plants, have the bigest responsibility for emissions of harmful gases, and for that reason it is necessary to start as soon as possible with a well-planned process of decarbonization, and giving up the energy production from coal and fossil fuels.

“Currently, more than 50% of plants in the countries on the European continent have decided to stop producing energy from coal, which means that they have seriously embarked on the process of decarbonisation, while BiH continues to approach this process without the proper strategy and plan. Not only that, but BiH still plans to build new blocks of coal-fired thermal power plants, which will undoubtedly prove to be unprofitable, and at the same time harmful to health and the environment. In this way, the authorities are making another failed investment, whose credit will be returned by the future generations “, pointed out Ivana Čulić from the Center for Environment.

Environmental organizations gathered in the EkoBiH network, also sent an appeal for the revision of the energy strategy, to all levels of government. The appeal calls for a change in energy strategy and the addition of a decarbonisation scenario, which is a green energy scenario.

By acceding to and signing the Paris Agreement, Bosnia and Herzegovina agreed to limit its own emissions so that the global temperature would not increase by 1.5oC, or 2o Celsius.

Such an increase in temperature would cause catastrophic consequences for nature and people.

The Paris Agreement also defines additional documents and strategies that signatory states must prepare, including BiH. One of them is the NDC – National Determined Contribution of emissions, which shows the state’s focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This document was recently adopted by the Council of Ministers of BiH, but it lists and plans new coal-fired power plants, which is unacceptable if we really want to reduce emissions.
