Construction of new dams and small hydropower plants, water pollution, inadequate river management and other ways of damaging watercourses continue to burden the environment, as well as local communities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. To support local civic initiatives trying to solve problems on rivers at the regional level, the Czech NGO Arnika, the Coalition for River Protection of BiH, and the Centre for the Environment are launching a Small Grants Program with financial support from the Czech Republic’s Transition Promotion Program.

Who can apply for a grant?

The Small Grants Program is intended primarily for registered voluntary civic initiatives and organisations. “We also encourage new initiatives to submit their ideas. It is an opportunity to obtain financial support for environmental protection and strengthening the rights of local communities. Although only one project from each initiative can receive a grant, one applicant can apply with several project ideas”, explains Zuzana Vachůnová from Arnica.
To find out more, a special information webinar will be held on October 5 at 5:00 PM for all those interested. You can find out more about the webinar at this link.

The Program will support projects aimed at combating damage to rivers, with an emphasis on solving specific problems at the local level, such as information campaigns, public hearings, negotiations with local governments, petitions, independent research, analysis, studies and measurements, participation in decision-making processes, documenting problems through journalistic investigations, interviews, photographs and videos, social media campaigns, etc.

“The goal of the grant program is to support civil society and help local communities find sustainable solutions in river protection. We want to focus on solving local problems related to endangered rivers and supporting active involvement in social processes “, explained Dragana Skenderija, coordinator of the Coalition for River Protection of BiH.

The total grant fund is 20,000 KM, and between 7 and 15 projects will be supported. The amount of each donation can vary from 1,000 to 3,000 KM. In 2020, 8,000 KM can be allocated to support 3-8 projects. The next round of small grants is planned for 2021. More detailed information on the small grants program and application can be found at this link.
