| Description | Planned hydropower projects on the Neretva and its basin threaten to destroy several areas that are designated as important under various legislations and conventions. This includes potential destruction of Natura 2000 areas (Neretva Delta), two Ramsar sites (Hutovo Blato and the Neretva Delta), five Emerald sites (Upper Neretva, Gatačko Polje, Nevesinjsko Polje, Dabarsko Polje, and Fatničko Polje), as well as the free-flowing Neretva River itself and its tributaries, such as the karst rivers (Zalomka, Buna, Bunica, and Bregava). These projects not only threaten these areas but also the potential resources that small local communities and ordinary citizens depend on and could use in the future, such as fertile land and drinking water. Through joint work within the Friends of the Earth network, collaboration is planned to share stories from the field, increase the visibility of local struggles through solidarity and support, and raise public awareness of the existing problems. The goal is for network members to support these local battles, spread awareness of their struggles internationally, and draw attention to what is happening in these areas. Plans include the preparation of a documentary film and other video materials, organizing events, and participating in international conferences. |
