| Description | In recent years, we have seen a noticeable increase in project activities by mining companies focused on geological surveys and planning for the opening of new mining sites. At the same time, local communities are dissatisfied, as they are not sufficiently included in the processes related to future spatial planning and the opening of new mines in the areas where they live. This process has led to many geological surveys being conducted or initiated without timely feedback to the local communities. The process eventually grew into dissatisfaction, and with certain incidents created by some companies, it resulted in citizen protests. The trend of increasing geological surveys and planning for new mining facilities is growing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, making it crucial to simultaneously raise the visibility and demands of smaller local communities and local stakeholders in order to highlight the problems and concerns these communities face. To this end, it is essential to have a broader discussion on mining and mineral extraction in the country. New projects are being planned in the field of mineral raw materials, and what is necessary for us in that process is to ensure the highest possible environmental standards, create better legal frameworks and practices, but also involve the public in the processes that should precede the opening of mines. Campaign goals and results: To postpone or halt the development of mining projects in the area of mining for critical raw materials until adequate procedures are established that are in line with respect for nature and human rights, primarily referring to environmental standards, nature conservation, stakeholder transparency, and public participation. Activites: Analysis of current allowed geological surveys and mining activities in the mineral resources sector, Meetings with local stakeholders on mining activities, Conference on critical raw materials mining in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Media Tour on Majevica mountain, To follow, monitor and advocate for better conditions in the field of energy and just transition. |
