On the occasion of April 22nd, Earth Day, which is celebrated this year under the slogan “Invest in our planet”, we remind you that we can all contribute to a better and healthier environment with small victories and positive examples that we have achieved from last year to today. Bosnia and Herzegovina faces threats to nature and people almost every day, and in order to preserve the wealth at our disposal (unique biodiversity, wild rivers, drinking water, forests), it is necessary that we all join the fight together. Over the past year, citizens have repeatedly raised their voices against harmful investments in their local communities, so the construction of a waste incinerator in Bosanski Petrovac was stopped, as well as the construction of a waste incinerator in Lopare.

With the aim of preserving natural resources, the Center for Environment (CfE) has launched several initiatives for the protection of certain areas. Our initiative for the protection of the Sana hot spring was accepted and today we have the Sana Hot Spring Nature Park. We also launched an initiative to protect the Prizren city canyon on the Sana River, an initiative to protect the upper course of the Neretva River, and an initiative to protect the forests around Banja Luka, which are currently being studied.

Among the positive news is certainly the adoption of the new Law on Renewable Energy Sources in Republika Srpska. In the process of public consultations, the CfE and members of the largest ecological network of organizations Eco BiH submitted remarks, suggestions and comments, a significant part of which was taken into account and included in the final proposal of this law. The CfE lawyers initiated several legal processes. Our lawsuit was accepted, and it was determined that there is no general interest in the Sutjeska 2b hydroelectric plant, and all activities related to the construction of a small hydroelectric plant on the Bjelava River were also suspended. Also, based on the CfE’s lawsuit, the environmental impact study for the Gacko-Centralno polje surface mine was annulled.

It is important to mention that on our initiative and financial support, the Draft Management Plan for the Tišina Protected Habitat was drawn up, and soon the Draft Management Plan for the brown bear in Bosnia and Herzegovina was drawn up. In terms of sustainable urban mobility and public space, we are making progress every day, so more bicycle parking spaces were installed in Banja Luka during the past year, and we also provided support to successful local space (re)development campaigns in Teslić, Gradiška, Glamoč, Bugojno, Sarajevo and Goražde.

We also invest in our planet with small contributions. Each individual can contribute to its preservation on a daily basis by supporting the fight for nature conservation and joining activists on the ground, by participating in public debates concerning his/her environment, by not allowing the usurpation of the common good by an individual.
