An illegal landfill, which is located in the village Dolovi in the municipality of Rudo, has been polluting the environment for years. Its waste flows into the river Lim, contaminating the fish stock, and also jeopardising the development of the tourist potential that this river and the municipality of Rudo have. On this occasion, the representatives of Center for Environment spoke with dissatisfied citizens today who made it clear: they want Lim without garbage and demand more acceptable location for the landfill.
They have been complaining about this problem for years, but the illegal landfill is becoming more and more intolerable.
“We are often forced to stay in the house all day, because the unpleasant odours spread all around the landfill and it is unbearable. It is also impossible to fish due to the burning of waste at the landfill, because the smoke descends on the river Lim and you can’t see anything, nor is it healthy to inhale it,” said Denis Vučić, a resident of the village Omačina in the municipality of Rudo.
His neighbour Munira Džabija added that they know that the landfill is needed, but that the location was not chosen well.
“We are advocating for the selection of another, more acceptable location, which will not bother people or animals as much. Such locations exist in this municipality, and to solve this problem good will of the authorities is needed, above all”.
This is also the view of the Republic Administration for Inspection Affairs, which after carrying out an inspection at the request of Center for Environment pointed out that “given the unfavourable location where the landfill is located (near a second-degree road, river Lim, small area, etc.), all efforts should be focused on finding a new location, for which the municipality of Rudo is responsible”.
Milica Končar from Center for Environment pointed out that the landfill in the municipality of Rudo violates all the rules for the establishment and management of the landfill.
“It is located right next to the main road, on the slope next to the river Lim. The trucks dump the waste which slides into the river, and the rain also washes the waste down to the river, which then flows into Drina river. An additional problem is the burning of the landfill, where various wastes are deposited, including hazardous ones, so that, apart from the spread of harmful smoke, there is also a great danger from explosions.”
Center for Environment will continue to support the locals who are fighting for a healthy environment in their municipality, and will continue to work together to find another, more acceptable location for the landfill that will be sanitary and in accordance with environmental standards and regulations.
