From the 16th to 22nd September 2020, citizens of the European Union, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries will have the opportunity to participate in the most popular event in the world related to urban mobility called “European Mobility Week” (EMW).
The Centre for Environment from Banja Luka is the national coordinator of the campaign, and on this occasion, we invite all municipalities and cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the celebration of “European Mobility Week” and the celebration of September 22nd, “World Car Free Day”.
For this year’s European Mobility Week, four cities / municipalities have registered their participation: Bijeljina, Laktasi, Vlasenica and Banja Luka.
In the coming days, the Centre for Environment will realise several activities in the area of Banja Luka, as before, and on Tuesday, September 22nd, starting at 6 pm, it will organise the 19th Banja Luka bicycle ride “Two Wheels Are Enough”.
This year’s theme of the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK is “Zero-emission mobility for all”. The topic reflects the ambitious goal to achieve a carbon-neutral continent until 2050, as set by Ursula von der Leien, President of the European Commission, representing the European Green Agreement. It also aims to emphasise the importance of accessibility to zero-emission transport and promote an inclusive framework that includes all citizens. Despite the different climatic, geographical and socio-economic conditions in European urban areas, measures can be taken to promote a carbon-neutral and inclusive urban environment.
Therefore, EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK 2020 encourages people and local authorities to take steps to achieve the long-term goal of a carbon-neutral continent.
In 2002, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment launched the “European Mobility Week” campaign, which is organised every year in more than 2,500 cities around the world. The ESM ends on September 22nd with the celebration of “World Car Free Day”.
