The Sanski Most citizens and the Municipal Council of this city resolutely opposed the construction of the Thermal Power Plant “Kamengrad” in the area of this municipality.

The Municipal Council even held a special thematic session on May 4 this year, during which the activities related to the TPP “Kamengrad” Sanski Most were discussed and a conclusion was adopted, which reads: “The information on the conducted activities related to TPP Kamengrad Sanski Most is taken into account and in the future no activity regarding this initiative will be undertaken without the consent of the Municipal Council and the citizens of Sanski Most”.

This conclusion and the citizens position was restated at a public debate on the spatial plan of the Una-Sana Canton, which was held in August in Sanski Most, where it was demanded to remove the construction Thermal Power Plant “Kamengrad” from that plan.

The Municipal Council session and the public hearing were preceded by a Sanski Most citizens’ petition, organized by the Citizens Association “For better Sanski Most”, which in just three days was signed by more than 1,400 Sanski Most’s citizens and residents of the areas where the construction of this plant is planned.

-The petition succeed, and that was seen by the local strongmen in  Sanski Most. It is known for everybody that the coal from Kamengrad‘s mine is one of the most harmful and that it would be disastrous for the citizens not only from Sanski Most but many other municipalities in the Sana river basin would feel the consecuences-, said Ermin Karić, president of the Citizens Association “For better Sanski Most”. He added that in case of any activities related to the thermal power plant, everything would be again repeated.

Redžo Kurbegović, Vice-chairman Sanski Most Municipal Council points out that no activities will be carried out due to the „Municipal Council strong conclusion for banning the construction of a thermal power plant in Sanski Most“.

Is anybody else able to carry this through apart from this legislative authority, I clearly doubt it. Here citizens are nevertheless consulted!- stressed Kurbegović.

That the authorities in BiH must understand that the end of the fossil fuel era has come and that it is time for investing in renewable energy sources is remarked by Center for Environment – Friends of Earth Bosnia-Herzegovina.

-With that we will not only protect our nature, but primarily the health of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as improve the quality of our lives. Municipalities and Cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina should just follow Sanski Most’s positive example. This clearly shows that with authorities’, municipality’s and also citizens’ common will it is possible to reach to the achievement of goals-, concluded Duška Kudra, Energy and Climate Change Program coordinator in Center for Environment – Friends of Earth Bosnia-Herzegovina.
