We have the right to know what we eat!

Center for the Environment in the past six months organized projections of the documentary movie about the future of the food and discussions about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their impact on food safety and the environment. Projections were held in Lopare, Bijeljina, Prijedor, Tuzla, Stjepan Polje, Trebinje, Tomislavgrad, Bugojno and Banja Luka.

“This is just the beginning of our activities to inform the public about GMOs and risks related to them. Only informed consumers and producers can quality participate in decision making. Also, even the process of ratification of the GMO amendment to the Aarhus convention by Bosnia and Herzegovina was stopped, we plan to be persistent and to ensure that citizens get easier access to information about this topic”, pointed out Marina Kuburić, from Center for the Environment.

Citizens expressed a lack of trust toward genetically modified food and wish for quality, domestic food, from conventional crops. Many of them pointed out that these presentations introduced them to term GMOs and risks related to their cultivation and use. What is worrying is the lack of interest of farmers.

“Even in Bosnia and Herzegovina there is the legislation about GMOs, laws at different levels are not harmonized. Implementation of this legislation is not satisfying, which prove rare controls that find illegal GM crops in our fields. One of the causes is lack of information for the producers and consumers. The ratification of the GMO amendment would show the determination of Bosnia and Herzegovina to harmonize domestic legislation from this topic with EU legislation, and to ease information access, public involvement, and raise public awareness about GMOs”, said Viktor Bjelić, coordinator of the Aarhus center Banja Luka.

The campaign for the ratification of the GMO amendment to the Aarhus convention by Bosnia and Herzegovina is conducted with the help of GEKKO and Grassroots foundations from Germany.
